Passports

You are required by law to have a valid passport when traveling between countries, ( and visas where required please check with your national consulate). Do not try to travel without a Passport you will be turned back held at leisure or even imprisoned.
Passports are valid for three months after the intended period of stay, and required by all nationals.
1. Nationals of the EU, except for Bulgaria and Romania, holding a valid national identity card, providing not taking up employment, for stays of up to three months;
2. Nationals of Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal and Spain with normal Passports, expired for up to five years, providing not taking up employment, for stays of up to three months;
Passport Note, Switzerland joined the Schengen Agreement on 12th December 2008.
Regulations also apply to Liechtenstein (no border control between the two countries).

Lost passports. Report as soon as you are aware of the loss and contact 0870 521 0410 or visit www.passport.gov.uk . you will need to complete a lost / stolen declaration (LS01)  If you get into difficulties abroad contact The British consulate 020 708 0187.

By Car

If you are traveling from the UK by car you will need to cross the English Channel 

Either way you will need a Booking reference from Altogold Travel (Altogold Travel or your chosen method of travel).

On Arrival at your chosen point to cross to Europe, you will need your Operators booking reference number. This Number covers your return journey (unless a one way ticket).

On arrival at your point of crossing you go through to the check in kiosk in your car presenting your booking confirmation to the staff who will enter your reference number and check your details/ passports are in order, you usually receive a ticket and be advised which lane to wait at for your turn to load. Remember there are customs limits even when traveling out of your own country.

DO NOT LEAVE YOU CAR OR LUGGAGE UNATTENDED.

Route 1: Calais to Interlaken

This route is simple and short, remaining on the French/Swiss motorways (with tolls). From the port of Calais you follow the motorway towards St Omer (A26) remain on this motorway through St Quentin - Reims- Metz (A4)-Strasbourg (A4). From Strasbourg remain on the Dual carriageway to COLMAR (Blue sign). This is all good class motorway/dual carriageway. After passing around COLMAR follow the signs to BASEL/BALE. This is motorway to Basel/Bale.

THE SWISS BORDER (See below)

Route 2: Calais to Interlaken

This route consists of almost all motorway and passes through France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. From the port of Calais. Follow signs to DUNKERQUE/LILLE. This road joins the E42/A25 motorway to LILLE (28 miles). In LILLE remain on the motorway. Follow the signs to BRUXELLES (BRUSSELS). This swings you up onto the Paris motorway for 1 mile before leaving to the right onto the Bruxelles motorway E42/A27. Initially follow the signs to BRUXELLES, then LIEGE as soon as it appears. At MOTORWAY JUNCTION Bruxelles/Liege, take LIEGE E42. Continue towards Liege to E411/E42 motorway junction north of NAMUR. At this junction turn right (south) onto the E411 motorway to LUXEMBOURG.

THE SWISS BORDER (See below)

Route 3: Zeebrugge to Interlaken

From ZEEBRUGGE join the N17 (Dual carriageway). This passes around BRUGGES before joining the E40. From OSTENDE you join the E40 on leaving the port. Hereafter remain on the E40 to  BRUXELLES. Pass around BRUXELLES to join the E411 motorway to LUXEMBOURG. En-route to LUXEMBOURG you pass the E411/E40 at NAMUR. Hereafter you join ROUTE 2. Total distance to INTERLAKEN 518 miles

CLIENTS FROM ZEEBRUGGE/OSTENDE JOIN ROUTE HERE)

Remain on this motorway which will pass around LUXEMBOURG, & THIONVILLE and on towards METZ. Approximately 5 miles (8km) before METZ you leave this motorway to JOIN THE A4 (E50/E25) MOTORWAY to STRASBOURG. This is a TOLL road . From Strasbourg follow the road to COLMAR / BASEL. This is all good class motorway/dual carriageway. Bypassing COLMAR follow the signs to BASEL/BALE. Total distance to INTERLAKEN approx. 575 miles

Route 4: Dieppe/Le Havre to Interlaken

DIEPPE to BEAUVAIS or LE HAVRE to ROUEN- BEAUVAIS. At BEAUVAIS follow signs to COMPIEGNE/ SOISSONS (N31/E46) to REIMS. At REIMS use the bypass round and follow the signs to ST DIZIER or CHALONS (N44)- LANGRES (N67)-VESOUL (N19)- BELFORT (N19)- BASEL (N19). distance to INTERLAKEN 520 miles.

THE SWISS BORDER

SWISS BORDER TO INTERLAKEN

YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE A MOTORWAY DISK (VIGNETTE) at the border unless you have previously purchased one from Tourism Switzerland Office in London. After clearing Swiss Customs follow GREEN motorway signs to BERN (& Zurich initially).

If your petrol/fuel is low there is a petrol station soon after joining the motorway. The Motorway passes around BERN en route to INTERLAKEN on the N8 .

N8, Bern: Approaching Interlaken from Bern on the N8, as the motorway reaches the end of Lake Thunersee, take the exit signposted 'Unterseen'. From this slipway you will pick up signs for 'Gunten, Thun and Manor Farm'. Continue along this road for 2 kms until you reach the roundabout. Take the roundabout exit direction 'Gunten' following signs for 'Camping 1'. As you pass Hotel Neuhaus on the left, continue over the road bridge and the entrance to Camping Manor Farm is on the left

 

By Air

With Air travel to Switzerland, approx one & half to two hours flying time. The main airports are Bern, Bale (Basel), Zurich & Geneva

Bern. On arrival and after passing customs. proceed to the Bus station which will take you to either Belp or Bern Railway station. Check which platform you require on the boards and Screens to board the train. From Belp or Bern station (Unless stated REMAIN ON THIS TRAIN) disembark at INTERLAKEN WEST station. NOTE: Some train will ask you to change at SPIEZ to finish your journey. At Interlaken WEST station disembark for either the Bus/Taxi to Neuhaus/Manor Farm (the driver will advise you when to get off if you ask him, If not you need to push the Stop button in the bus. 

Getting off at Manor farm, you need to cross the road (Be careful there is a pedestrian crossing USE IT). Walk between the Snack/ Takeaway and Landhaus Restaurant into Camping Manor Farm, take the first left (not back on you self) past a small building (toilet block). Keep on this camp road for approximately 50m Altogold Reception will be on the Right hand side.

Our Comments, The Plus side:-  Near to Interlaken, saves at best 1 hours travel, nice small airport. Minuses:- Expensive route, difficulty getting good connections,

Who flies to Bern : Flybe. (Southampton, Birmingham)

Zurich. On arrival and after passing customs. proceed to the railway station. As you exit the customs and into the public area, Zurich is a large international airport so depending on you location to which route you follow to the Station (Follow signs). Check which platform you require on the boards and Screens board the train. The train normally  (not always) Routes via Bern station (Unless stated REMAIN ON THIS TRAIN) disembark at INTERLAKEN WEST station. NOTE: Some train will ask you to change at SPIEZ to finish your journey. At Interlaken WEST station disembark for either the Bus/Taxi to Neuhaus/Manor Farm (the driver will advise you when to get off if you ask him, If not you need to push the Stop button in the bus.

Geneva . Geneva airport plan. On arrival and after passing customs. proceed to the railway station. As you exit the customs and into the public area turn Left. Approximately 100m Through a set of doors into the Station area where you take the escalator to the platforms. Check which platform you require on the boards and Screens board the train. The train normally (not always) Routes via Bern station where you will change to the Zurich Interlaken Train. NOTE: Some train will ask you to change at SPIEZ to finish your journey. At Interlaken WEST station disembark for either the Bus/Taxi to Neuhaus/Manor Farm (the driver will advise you when to get off if you ask him, If not you need to push the Stop button in the bus.

Getting off at Manor farm, you need to cross the road (Be careful there is a pedestrian crossing USE IT). Walk between the Snack/ Takeaway and Landhaus Restaurant into Camping Manor Farm, take the first left (not back on you self) past a small building (toilet block). Our Comments, The Plus-s:-  Budget flights offering good value. Ideal airport for first timers as its small to medium size Minuses:- Closes at approx 11pm and re open at 6am, 2.5 -3 hours + Train journey.

All rail to Europe takes its route from St Pancras Station in London. the route you chose will decide the duration of time i.e. Switzerland via Paris is around 20 hours. Switzerland Via BRUXELLES is 25 hours.

All passengers by rail to Interlaken

On arrival at Interlaken please note the town has TWO stations.

Interlaken Ost if you are booked into our apartments Orion or Hotels at the east end of Town. Orion

Interlaken West if you are booked into our Mobile homes or Hiedi's hostels.

Warning triangle, if use must be 50-150m behind your vehicle as a warning to approaching  traffic. (Hazard warning lights is NOT enough)

Visas
Not required by all nationals referred to in the chart above for stays of up to three months.

(a) Tourists and business visitors who travel repeatedly to Switzerland but stay less than three months each time must apply for a residence permit if their total stay exceeds six months within a period of 12 months.
(b) Nationals not referred to in the chart above are advised to contact the embassy to check visa requirements.

Currency
Swiss Franc (CHF; symbol SFr) = 100 cents (called centimes in French, rappen in German and centesimi in Italian). Notes are in denominations of SFr1,000, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of SFr5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and 5 centimes.
Currency Exchange, There are bureau de change at train stations and banks.
Credit/Debit Cards and ATMs. American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted. ATMs are widely available.
Traveler's Cheque's
Pound Sterling, US Dollar or Euro cheque's are accepted at airports, railway stations and banks. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, visitors are advised to take traveler's cheque's in Pounds Sterling, Euros or US Dollars.
